This comprehensive textbook, now fully revised and up-dated in its fourth edition, provides an authoritative account of all aspects of perioperative care for surgical patients. All areas of medical disease are discussed with clear recommendations for work up and management in the perioperative period. Basic discussions of surgical procedures are included to help non-surgeons understand the procedures and their implications for patient care. It includes numerous contributions from leading experts at national centers of medical excellence, and will serve as a significant work of reference for internists, anesthesiologists and surgeons.
Patients with a range of medical conditions undergo surgeries of varying levels of risk, and the evolving field of consult medicine aims to address their needs, whether pre- or post-surgery. This new edition of The Perioperative Medicine Consult Handbook provides useful information, advice, and guidelines based on a combination of clinical experience and evidence-based medicine. It covers topics in many major clinical areas (anesthesiology, cardiology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, rheumatology, endocrinology, and many others) and puts critical surgery information at a consult physician's fingertips. New to this edition are chapters on thyroid disease, restrictive lung disease, sickle cell disease, inflammatory bowel disease, nutrition, and perioperative care of elderly patients. The entire volume has been streamlined for a more precise presentation of essential perioperative management guidelines. Originally created by the Medicine Consult Service team at the University of Washington Medical Center, and now fully updated into a comprehensive second edition, this quick reference is sure to be indispensable for residents and consult physicians alike.
Advances in intensive and critical care medicine occur rapidly. Innovation, training and research are the pillars that support a process deriving from basic science and multiprofessional/multidisciplinary interventions. The APICE 2010 Yearbook highlights several innovations for optimising prevention and management measures for the critically ill by integrating diagnostic procedures with pharmacological and technological options. Considering that cerebral, respiratory, cardiovascular, renal and metabolic dysfunctions occurring during serious illnesses or syndromes represent risk factors for patient survival, the final goal remains multifaceted: to improve standards and quality of care; to introduce the expanding concept of clinical governance and professionalism; to focus on the importance of ethical principles for establishing a process of patient-centered and evidence-based care. For these reasons, medical professionals must reach a consensus regarding the importance of continuing medical education.
This atlas is a practical guide for practitioners who perform interventional procedures with radiographic guidance to alleviate acute or chronic pain. The author provides an overview of each technique, with detailed full-color illustrations of the relevant anatomy, technical aspects of each treatment, and a description of potential complications. For this revised and expanded Second Edition, the author also discusses indications for each technique, as well as medical evidence on the technique's applicability. The new edition features original drawings by a noted medical artist and for the first time includes three-dimensional CT images that correlate with the radiographic images and illustrations for a fuller understanding of the relevant anatomy.

- Line drawings extensively re-done in colour throughout. Will improve the user's understanding of the physiological processes under discussion.
- 5-10 Key points added at end of chapters. Will provide the user with a useful summary of the essential bottom line information.
- Pitfalls in treatment and management emphasized in each chapter.Providers the user with expert advice on practical issues that will be encountered on a day-to-day basis in the ICU.
- Includes the most current classification and "clinical scoring" schemes.
- Keeps the user abreast of the latest developments in diagnosis and management.
The "Bible on Anesthesia Equipment" returns in a new Fifth Edition, and once again takes readers step-by-step through all the basic anesthesia equipment. This absolute leader in the field includes comprehensive references and detailed discussions on the scientific fundamentals of anesthesia equipment, its design, and its optimal use. This thoroughly updated edition includes new information on suction devices, the magnetic resonance imaging environment, temperature monitoring and control, double-lumen tubes, emergency room airway equipment, and many other topics. Readers will have access to an online quizbank at a companion Website.
Safe and effective prescribing is a cornerstone of proper patient care. There has in recent years been a significant increase in the numbers of healthcare professionals able to prescribe; however, sources of drug information tend to focus on only one area of prescribing. The Oxford Handbook of Practical Drug Therapy links practical information about how to use medicines with concise details about the pharmacology of a drug, and the principles of clinical pharmacology that govern its action. The overall structure of this handbook is similar to the UK national formulary, with topics on each drug arranged broadly by therapeutic category. When a drug has several different uses, these are brought together in a single topic, allowing the reader to appreciate its full range of actions, whether therapeutic or adverse. Each drugs topic provides information in a clearly laid out and standardised form, and includes a graphical representation of the pharmacological actions of the drug, and its potential uses, practical advice on a drug's major indications, a list of common and serious adverse effects, major drug-drug interactions, practical advice on monitoring for therapeutic and adverse effects, and what to tell the patient. Teaching points throughout the text draw out pharmacological principles, so that readers can increase their basic knowledge by linking theory with practical examples. Also included are several boxes giving guidance on the approach to therapy of specific diseases an clinical problems. In some cases, algorithms for the treatment of medical emergencies are given, and this new edition features case histories throughout the text to illustrate the issues one may face in practical prescribing. The Oxford Handbook of Practical Drug Therapy brings together for the first time in a single book really practical information on safe prescribing, with the background knowledge that underpins clinical pharmacology. Fully revised with new guidance and important safety information, this book is aimed primarily at medical students and trainees, it will also be invaluable to family doctors, clinical pharmacists, and nurse prescribers.

Hypercoagulability and bleeding are problems physicians frequently encounter when treating intensive care patients. The coagulation mechanism is a tightly controlled system. Its balance is disturbed in conditions such as septicemia, trauma, shock, and others. The dis turbances may be local or disseminated and the therapeutic options available are limited and nonspecific: limited since in most cir cumstances they may not affect the underlying disease and are si milarly independent of the pathogenic mechanism; nonspecific since they cannot be specifically targeted to the problem of local or sys temic disturbance of coagulation. Furthermore, increased and de creased coagulability may be present at the same time. Activation of coagulation may lead to fibrin deposition and decreased hemostatic capacity, as seen in disseminated intravascular coagulation. New diagnostic approaches for acquired disorders of coagulation have been developed and form a new basis for therapeutic strategies. Despite this progress, many physicians are aware of the problem that, especially for intensive care patients, a treatment very often has to be selected before diagnostic procedures can be completed. We also know that for many diseases rare occurrence or the hetero genity of the patient population make it quite difficult to conduct clinical studies which prove that a therapeutic regimen is efficacious. Thus, much discussion about coagulation disorders in critically ill patients is still necessary. Even so, it is important to provide guidelines for handling these problems.
